career change at 50

The prospect of changing careers at 50 might stir up equal parts excitement and anxiety. But it really is never too late to pursue a career that truly lights you up.

This topic hits close to home right now as I’ve recently turned 50 myself! So, I thought it would be the ideal time to talk about why a career change at this stage of life isn’t just possible, but it could potentially be the best decision you ever make.

In this blog, I’ll share some actionable advice and practical steps you can take to navigate a successful career pivot at 50.

Why consider a career change at 50?

By the time you reach 50, you’ve probably built up a considerable amount of experience and skills in your chosen career. But maybe, somewhere along the way, you’ve realised your current path no longer fills you with excitement like it once did.

Whether you’re feeling burnt out, craving a fresh challenge or searching for that much-coveted work-life balance, this could be the ideal opportunity to make that switch.

There’s no doubt about it: a career change at 50 can be incredibly exciting and rewarding. It’s a chance to step into a new chapter of your life, filled with fresh opportunities and experiences. But it can also feel a lot like stepping into the unknown.

So, before you dive headfirst into a new career, it’s essential to reflect on what you genuinely want from the next chapter of your life.

Here are a few questions to help you get started:

1. “Why do I want to change careers?” Is it because you’re feeling unfulfilled in your current role or company? Or perhaps you’re looking for more flexibility? Understanding the core of the “why” behind your decision will give you the clarity you need to help shape your next move.

2. “What are my strengths and passions?” What excites you? What have you always been drawn to? When you understand where your passions and strengths lie, finding a career that feels like a natural fit will be much easier.

3. “Am I financially ready?” Some career changes might mean a temporary dip in income or an initial investment in retraining. So, planning for any short-term sacrifices with a long-term vision is essential.

4. “How will this impact my family and current lifestyle?” A career shift doesn’t only affect you but those around you too, especially when it requires an initial investment of your time and/or money. Having a support system in place when changing career is important, so make sure you discuss with your loved ones how this change could impact the family too.

5. “What does success look like for me in this new phase?” Is it financial security, personal growth or a better work-life balance? Getting clear on what success means to you will guide your decisions moving forward.

Feeling ready to take the leap? Here are some actionable steps to help you get started on your career change journey. Remember, the first step is often the hardest, but it’s also the most empowering.

1. Do your research. Explore industries and roles that pique your interest. Attend industry events, take online courses or even set up informational interviews to see what’s out there.

2. Update your skills. Depending on the career you’re considering, you might need new skills or certifications. But don’t let that intimidate you. Online learning platforms such as Coursera, Udemy and LinkedIn Learning, allow you to learn from home at your own pace. Weekend classes or
workshops can also be a fantastic way to gain new knowledge without overhauling your life.

3. Get some hands-on experience. Consider volunteering, interning or taking on freelance projects in your desired field. These experiences will not only help you build your CV but also allow you to dip your toes into the new industry before fully committing.

4. Revamp your CV and LinkedIn profile. Tailor your CV and LinkedIn profile to reflect the career shift you want to make, and be sure to highlight your transferable skills, such as leadership, project management and communication. These skills are highly sought after in any industry! If you need more tips to help you create an eye-catching CV, I’ve written a blog about that, which you can read here.

5. Leverage your networks. Attend networking events or join relevant online groups related to your desired field. Many opportunities arise through networking, so don’t be shy about reaching out to your connections and getting the word out.

6. Be patient and stay resilient. Whatever your age, career changes don’t happen overnight; setbacks are part of the journey. So, be patient and stay focused on your long-term vision.
